The story

Ten-year-old Little Steps fears his name is holding him back from greatness. Set in the mystical age of Pharaoh Hatshepsut, he sets out to restore harmony to the kingdom — and to himself — by journeying up and down the Nile to find and unite three sacred symbols: the Staff, balance of the body; the Flail, balance of the mind; and the Crook, balance of the emotions.

Part One is the quest for the first symbol, the Staff. It carries the friends from Buhen to the great temple at Karnak, north to Dendera, and on by Nile to Abusir, where Little Steps meets Pharaoh Hatshepsut and learns whether he has succeeded.

He does not travel alone

• Red Brick, a gentle giant from Thebes, is always ready with a shoulder ride.
• Axiom, a wise centaur, is a true master of nonsense.
• Lapis, a young vulture, is finding her true colours along the way.
